Great Spot from INPES

As many of my friends know, I dislike smoking. And so I think this spot from INPES (France’s National Institute of Prevention and Health Education) has done a great spot on highlighting how incredibly lucky we all are to be the ones to stand here today and live our lives. Why would we throw our luck out the window on an unnecessary habit?

Check it out.

Update: Join the Fight: Canadian Cancer Society

Just wanted to add an update to my previous post on DDB Canada’s great spot for the Canadian Cancer Society.

Mike, from the Canadian Cancer Society, left me a comment letting me know that these were indeed real people who were either patients, survivors or caregivers. That’s really, really great to hear. That makes this ad, in my eyes, that much more powerful when I know the emotion is real.

As well, Mike let me know that they are adding companion videos on their YouTube channel, found here. Four of the total eight videos have been posted, so I’m off to check out the others!

Thanks for the note Mike! Glad I could get an answer so quickly! :)

If you’re ready to join the fight on Cancer, or would like to donate to the cause, feel free to check out their website for this campaign at www.FightBack.ca.

Join the Fight: Canadian Cancer Society

A great ad done by DDB Canada for the Canadian Cancer Society.

Found via Tom at AdHunt.

I know I’m a bit of bleeding heart and this ad definitely played to that. But I love the raw emotion displayed here. The anger, the hurt, the hate. Powerful stuff.

I wonder if these were actors or true survivors. I’d like to know the answer to that.

Awkward Swiss Chalet Ad and Hilarious Reactions

This is a great ad for Swiss Chalet. And when I say “great”, what I really mean is, “horribly cringe inducing.”

I’m not really sure what the advertising agency was trying to do with this. Maybe go for the “heart-warming family (re)bonding moment”? But, to me at least, it kind of came out…

Well. I’ll just let you watch and judge for yourself.

So, I found this ad via SmartCanucks.ca. What makes this bad ad even better? The blog reader’s reactions!

I had to share a few of the “gems.”

What this commercial says to me is, “Swiss Chalet – the perfect restaurant for estranged family” or something along those lines.

Exactly what you want your brand to mean.

Then the dad reaches across the table to give his daughter a French kiss…. ewwww

Incest: A Family Matter. And who better to celebrate with than Swiss Chalet?

For your creepy holidays: Swiss Chalet.

“Honey! We’ve found our new restaurant!”

I think the ad says, “even your loser dad whom your mom divorced can afford to take you to a decent dinner at Swiss Chalet”.

“Gee whiz, Dad! This is the best dang Christmas present a kid could ever ask for! If only you ‘n Mommy were back together… Everything would be perfect.”

“Son, your mother is nothing but a base floozie!” *throws The Festive Special to the ground*

That’s an extremely disturbing TV ad considering all the latest reports of pedophilia in the news.

I can’t. stop. laughing.

I would not reconcile with my estranged father because he bought me an $8 chicken meal – just sayin’…

Yes! You go, girl! You are better than that! Don’t let him buy your love.

Okay, so maybe we’re being unnecessarily harsh and tearing this ad to shreds but then again… Isn’t that what Christmas is all about? :D

Boys, listen up!

You want females a rap-tap-taping at your chamber door? Then look no further than your wireless network settings. Pay close attention to what these fine neighbours have ingeniously done and maybe one day, you too!, can have some pretty fillies looking you up.

Brilliant, Distrubing Spot for Casa do Menor

This is a great ad for Casa do Menor, posted initially by The Marketing Blog. As per The Marketing Blog’s post, it was reportedly done by McCann Erickson Milan.

The reaction is not immediate. It’s only when the tagline comes up that you begin to realize what you have just seen. And then you play this ad back over in your head and it’s only then the heart-wrenching, sickness-in-your-stomach feeling hits you.

I am having trouble watching it a second time. It’s a great parallel, this idea of “burden”. Brutal but well done.

Remembrance Day: November 11, 2009

One of my strongest Remembrance Day references is the Canadian Heritage Spot showing Canadian physician and Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae finding the inspiration and writing the poem on May 3, 1915. He wrote this poem after he witnessed the death of his friend, Lieutenant Alexis Helmer, who was only 22 years old, the day before.

(Source.)

I’m not going to claim I know much about the horrors the generations previous to us witnessed in war. I wish I knew more. I wish my grandfathers had both been alive when I was born and to see me grown up. I would have loved to have asked them about their experiences in the war and to find out their stories.

Instead, I rely on other’s tales of loved ones and the pain and suffering they endured to fight for and protect our amazing country, Canada.

Thank you for your sacrifices. I wear my poppy today to show my respect for all the veterans gave up so that our families can enjoy the freedoms we do. We are proud of you.

Best Cover Songs: YouTube Edition

Every once in a while, I do myself some unexpected psychological damage. Last night was no exception. I was minding my own business on the internet, when I thought, “Hey, what’s the harm in looking at a video or two on YouTube?” Little did I know what I was getting myself into…

In my naivete and innocence, I began exploring the inner depth’s of YouTube’s greatest and most feared realm: the cover song video. I am now forever scarred. I will always view the world through different… and damaged… eyes and ears.

Therefore, I present to you: The Best Cover Songs: YouTube Edition.

Pray for Mojo.

ONE:

Sam Tsui’s Cover of Glee’s Cover of “Don’t Stop Believing” – Journey (phew!)
One of my first – and favourite – songs I found. Ever since Glee reintroduced this song to the general public, I have loved it hardcore. I’m just impressed with the various 1-man acts here.

TWO:

J Bigga’s Cover of “Various Songs” – Lady GaGa
Not sure if I would exactly call it a “cover” per se, but you got to agree, it’s a loose interpretation of her songs and it’s pretty fantastic.

THREE:

Vanilla Sky’s Cover of “Umbrella” – Rhianna
Another odd one… but fantastic none the less. This is a great song to cover. I love many of the renditions out there. This one takes the cake though, with its punk-rock/glam cross-over. Sweet as!

FOUR:

Rudi Douglas’s Cover of “Poker Face” – Lady GaGa
Another Lady GaGa one – there are so many out there! – but this one is on the complete opposite end of the spectrum. Haunting and beautiful.

FIVE:

Megan and Liz’s Cover of “Halo” – Beyonce
Love this song and love these girls. They’re great.

SIX:

Tamar’s Cover of “Apologize” – OneRepublic
The winner of OneRepublic’s cover contest. Her voice is beautiful!

SEVEN:

Loren and Kris’s Cover of “Battlefield” – Jordin Sparks
Really like this song. The guy in front is cute too! Wish the quality was a little better because I really like her voice!

EIGHT:

A friend of mine’s cover of “Waiting on an Angel” – Ben Harper.
I think it’s gorgeous! I love Ben Harper and I love my friend. Perfect combination. :)

NINE:

Roi and Alex’s Cover of “Best Friends” – Toy Box
This video just makes me laugh for hours and hours! These guys have tons of hilarious videos, including some Disney ones. It was tough to chose.

TEN:

Marie Digby’s Cover of “All Good Things Come to An End” – Nelly Furtado
Ahhh this song is amazing. I can’t even explain! It brings back so many memories.

BONUS!

Christopher Walkin’s Cover of “Poker Face” – Lady Gaga
Oh Christopher Walkin, how you have completed me!

Photoshop and Me: The Untold Story

I saw this link recently somewhere – cannot even remember where – about a Photoshop effect and was intrigued. It was so pretty! I have Photoshop on my computer but rarely use it. Back in the day, I used to use it quite a bit for an unnamed website and felt comfortable with the program.

These days? Not so much… I am very much lost in all the different features. But I thought I’d try this step-by-step guide as a little challenge to see if I could do it.

Well. It took 2 different evenings, a plea for help on Twitter, a phone call with a friend and an IM conversation with someone else to figure it out. So I’m quite proud of myself for actually figuring it out, if I do say so myself.

(Let’s not discuss the fact that there is a video of the tutorial at the bottom. Sigh. Darn me and my lack of scrolling skills. I clearly should have gone all the way to the bottom before I began. Yikes.)

Here is the finished product! Yes, this is what I do with my Saturday nights.
